The first octavo edition, containing the posthumous addition of the life of the author and including the author's An Historical Survey of the French Colony in the Island of St. Domingo as the third volume. Includes maps of Jamaica, Barbados, Granada, St. Vincent, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua, Virgin Islands, Tobago, and St. Domingo (Hispaniola).
Bryan Edwards (1743-1800), a West India merchant, originally published the first work, containing much information on the slave trade (of which he was a supporter), in 1793. The third volume containing the history of St. Domingo came about when the author conceived the idea of writing a general account of all the settlements in the West Indies, but with especial attention to the French colonies. He visited St. Domingo shortly after the revolt in 1791.
