Bryan Edwards (1743-1800), a West India merchant, originally published the first work, containing much information on the slave trade (of which he was a supporter), in 1793. The third volume containing the history of St. Domingo came about when the author conceived the idea of writing a general account of all the settlements in the West Indies, but with especial attention to the French colonies. He visited St. Domingo shortly after the revolt in 1791.
Third edition, with considerable additions; 3 vols, 8vo (22.5 x 14.5 cm); 11 engraved plates, 10 maps (4 folding); contemporary speckled calf, flat gilt spines with contrasting red and green morocco lettering pieces, all edges speckled, spines a little rubbed with upper joint of vol. 1 starting, a very good set; xxiv, xxiii, 576; viii, 617; xxxii, 477 pp.
