London, Edward Moxon & Co., 1864

Handsome riviere binding. Alfred Lord Tennyson's long poem, telling the tale of Enoch Arden who set out to sea to help support his impoverished family, ending up shipwrecked and lost presumed dead for over ten years, only to return to find his wife happily remarried and one of their three original children dead, subsequently dying of a broken heart himself. The text is notable for Tennyson's use of subtle religious parallels that run throughout the poem.

The title lent itself to a doctrine of law in the US, granting a divorce or legal exemption to allow a person to remarry, if his or her spouse has been absent without explanation for a certain number of years, typically seven.

In addition to Enoch Arden, there are fifteen further poems, including; The Sailor Boy; The Islet; Welcome to Alexandra.

First edition, later printing, without advertisements; small 8vo (170 x 110 mm); a couple of very faint marginal spots, otherwise internally near-fine; contemporary full red morocco. gilt and blind-embossed panelled, gilt spine, yellow endpapers and all edge gilt, neat contemporary ink ownership to upper free endpaper, rubbing to extremities, spine faded, minor soiling to boards, otherwise very good.
