Folllowing 'the posthumous publication of N[orthanger Abbey[ and P[ersuasion] in 1818, there was no more printing until 1833. But (sic) even if the publishers' stock was exhausted, the book-clubs and libraries kept the novels in circulation. From 1833 Bentley's collected edition, and some separate editions, made the novels accessible' for purchase once more. Bentley published the novels as part of his Standard Novels, of Novels by Miss Jane Austen, in five single volumes until 1879 when a sixth volume was added, 'reprinting the Memoir' of 1871.
6 volumes, 8vo (200 x 135; engraved pictorial frontispiece to each vol., tissue-guarded, a few leaves roughly cut and a couple uncut, otherwise internally fine; early 20th century half tan calf over cloth boards gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, as published, lightly rubbed some light soiling to cloth, minor bubbling to upper cloth of Sense and Sensibility, otherwise very good.
