Baikie studied at the University of Edinburgh, where he 'developed a keen interest in astronomy, and during his ministry at Ancrum he devoted a great deal of time to its study. He observed systematically and made many drawings of the planets, chiefly Jupiter' (Royal Astronomical Society obituary). Through the Telescope was his first book, and was pitched at a popular audience of beginner astronomers.
First edition; 8vo; frontispiece and 31 plates, illustrations within the text, contemporary gift inscription to the half title, which is also toned, a little toning and some faint marks to the title, three gatherings at rear partially opened; original blue cloth, titles and pictorial designs to spine and upper board gilt, black coated endpapers, top edge gilt, spine toned, cloth a little rubbed with small worn spots at the extremities, some small scuffs to the lower board, very good condition; 292pp.
