First edition of this uncommon and well-illustrated work by the Scottish minister and amateur astronomer James Baikie (1866-1924).

Baikie studied at the University of Edinburgh, where he 'developed a keen interest in astronomy, and during his ministry at Ancrum he devoted a great deal of time to its study. He observed systematically and made many drawings of the planets, chiefly Jupiter' (Royal Astronomical Society obituary). Through the Telescope was his first book, and was pitched at a popular audience of beginner astronomers.
