Soniashnyi Promin' [Sunbeam].

Soniachnyi Promin' is a novella by Hrinchenko (1863-1910), a prominent Ukrainian linguist, ethnographer, writer, and public figure, who was influential in promoting Ukrainian in schools in the Kharkiv and Katerynoslav regions, and authored some of the first Ukrainian-language textbooks. His prose 'depicted Ukrainian peasant life while raising urgent social questions, the attitude of the intelligentsia to the peasantry, the education and denationalization of the rural population, and the relation between nationalism and radicalism or socialism' (Encyclopedia of Ukraine).

The work was first published in 1892 but this 1924 edition has the original wrappers designed by the prominent Ukrainian graphic artist and illustrator Pavlo Kovzhun.

8vo (21.3 x 14.2 cm); pencil gift inscription to p1; original printed wrappers designed by Pavlo Kovzhun, closed tear to top of rear wrapper, small loss to bottom of spine, title in manuscript to spine, small 'printed in Poland' stamp to bottom of upper wrapper, some slight age toning to margins else a very good copy.
