First edition of Dahl's first book, a fanciful tale of the curious little creatures, driven from their homes in the trees by the march of wartime industries, that plagued aviators' imaginations. Despite Dahl's British nationality, this was first published in the U.S., intended to accompany a Disney animated film that was never produced.
First edition. 4to. (28.5 x 23 cm), with colour illustrations by Disney Studios, mostly full-page colour plates. Publisher's cloth-backed pictorial boards, light wear, mainly at foot of boards and corners. An excellent copy though without the dust-wrapper but accompanied by a SIGNED LETTER from Roald Dahl to Miss Swinley offering this copy as a compensation for a negative response to an enquiry from this lady, with the original stamped envelope dated 30 Jan., 1986.
