[Anthology of the House of Romanov]
Fine example of one of the most luxurious works published in the year when the Russian Empire celebrated the 300th anniversary of reigning House of Romanov. Beautiful illustrations executed by some of the best artists of that time – V.M. Vasnetsov, A.F. Maximov, S.I. Yaguzhinskiy and N.N. Khokhryakov – were reproduced using the technique of chromolithography with rich decoration in gold.
The word "Izbornik" (anthology) in ancient Russia had a meaning of a manuscript collection of articles and fragments selected from various works. Most likely this publication received its name because of the variety of materials included. As stated in the foreword, under the theme of the anniversary of Romanov's dynasty in this publication the editor has united "Ancient records and original works – literature and fiction." The publisher Levenson planned to produce twelve issues in total, three each year, but only two came out. All profits from the publication were intended for charitable educational purposes.
The first issue of "Izbornik", offered here, contains six articles related to the history of the Romanovs dynasty, including the work of Professor N.V. Pokrovskiy "Kostroma Ipatiev Monastery - the cradle of the ruling dynasty", the study of E.V. Barsov "Historical foundations of royal power in Russia in folk songs and legends. The issue finishes with "Anthem of the ruling the House of Romanov" written by Prince DP Golitsyn-Muravlinym.
