Full brown crushed morocco by René Aussourd with his signature gilt and dated 1921, front board with inlaid morocco foliate sections in greens and browns to frame a colour and marbled morocco vignette of a diabolical head, additional inlaid foliate sections to rear board and spine, banded spine in five compartments with gilt titles, red morocco doublures ruled in gilt and with elaborate inlaid colour morocco sections to form a floral motif, patterned watered silk and marbled endpapers, wrappers and backstrip preserved, a.e.g., marbled board

This copy includes the following:
- 2 portraits (one plate in one state and one plate in 3 states) and
36 original etchings, each in three states (one plate is in 2 states):
black with remarques, coloured with remarques, and 'avant lettre' for
the full-page plates, 'avec lettre' for the head and tailpieces.
- Also included are 5 planches refusées (3 in 3 states, 2 in one state).
- In addition, this copy has two original signed gouaches: - for 'Le
Rideau Cramoisi' (The Crimson Curtain), signed at lower left; and for
the portrait of Jules Barbey D'Aurevilly, signed in in the image at
lower left and on the support sheet in sanguine crayon at lower right.
