A smart, five-volume set of Ferguson's History of the Progress and Termination of the Roman Republic, illustrated with 6 engraved folding maps.

A friend of Adam Smith and David Hume, Ferguson (1723-1816) was Professor of Pneumatics and Moral Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh from 1764 to 1785, when he was succeeded by his erstwhile student Dugald Stewart. He is best known for this history of the Roman Republic, first published in 1783, which won praise from Edward Gibbon, and his Essay on the History of Civil Society.

'New Edition'; 5 vols; 8vo (22 x 13.5 cm); engraved portrait vignette to title, 6 engraved folding maps, bookplate to front pastedown of each vol., spotting to maps, occasional light toning and offsetting; contemporary polished calf, covers with blind roll within triple gilt filet border, contrasting green morocco lettering-pieces to spine, marbled edges, joints and extremities a little rubbed, corners bumped, very good.
