editor recommended by isaac newton
The first and only English language edition of this uncommon work on algebra, translated from the Latin edition of 1693. Both versions were published for use at Christ's Hospital, London, a charity school originally founded in 1553 and now one of the oldest boarding schools in England, located just south of Horsham.Though little is known of the author, Johannes Alexander, the editor of this edition was Humphrey Ditton (1675-1714). Ditton completed original research on the tangents of curves and on optics, but was most recognised for his textbooks and expository articles, including two important volumes on the work of Isaac Newton, who recommended him as the first mathematics teacher at Christ's Hospital.
First edition in English; 8vo (18.5 x 12.5 cm); numerous in-text mathematical diagrams, contemporary ownership inscription in ink to pastedown and front free endpaper, misprinted pagination (pp. 171-191) corrected in ink by a contemporary hand, light spotting; full contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt morocco lettering piece to spine, edges sprinkled red, lower joint of upper board slightly split, corners bumped, a little rubbing to extremities, a very good copy; [8], 179; ii, 128pp.
