This is the first time Trollope based a novel on psychological analysis rather than a study of social manners. It is a tale of the gradual falling into madness of a suspicious husband and although it has the usual Trollopian elements, e.g. a subplot revolving around the Cathedral Close of Exeter, the pathological study of Trevelyan is the book's main theme and its importance in the chronology of Trollope's work.

First edition; 2 vols, Royal 8vo (125 x 155mm); bound without half title to vol. ii, 64 wood engraved illustrations by Marcus Stone, occasional spot or mark, else very good internal condition; near-contemporary half tan calfskin over cockerel paper covered boards, matching endpapers, top edges gilt, spine in 6 compartments with red morocco lettering piece to second and green morocco lettering piece to third, gilt lettering and decoration, gilt ribs, some general signs of wear, primarily to extremities and joints, otherwise very good; [xii], 384pp, [x], 384pp.

Bibliography: Sadleir 31.
