First edition of this unusual work on 'why the winds blow', based on 'observations conducted between 1847 and 1853 in N. W. India, with the intention of elucidating the law of storms'. Little is known about the author, save that, as explained in the preface, he was stationed in India with the Lahor Artillery Division during 1850 and 1851, where he studied the local dust storms. It is unclear if he was related to the geologist and soldier Frederick Henry Baddeley.

First edition; 8vo (23.5 x 14.5 cm); two 'wind card' illustrations described as 'plate 19', small diagrams within the text, Norfolk & Norwich Library bookplate, contents toned, some small marks and spots, minor abrasion to final leaf of text slightly affecting a few words, and with associated marks on the verso; contemporary purple half cloth with marbled sides, title to spine gilt, library ticket to upper board, red speckled edges, binder's ticket of Jarrold & Sons of Norwich, spine faded, cloth a little rubbed and marked, very good condition; 137pp.
