Stock Code 114239
London, Day and Sons, 1856.
Although published during the Crimean War, they show quiet landscapes, calm cities and some dramatic natural settings and make no reference to the war, unlike Simpson's or Dolby's works. They include a view of Prince Vorontsov's palace in Alupka, which Bossoli extensively drew, as well as depicting Sevastapol, Balaklava, the Alma, Inkerman, Mount St Peter, Kertch, and the Bosphorus.
First edition; folio (57 x 38 cm); 51 tinted chromolithograph plates on 29 sheets after Bossoli, lithographed title with vignette, letterpress list of plates, some very occasional marginal spotting, frayed outer margins to several plates professionally repaired, last plate with several large tears repaired without any loss, otherwise very good internally; later half calf, marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt in six compartments, later endpapers, a nice copy.
Abbey (Travel), 239; Bobins I, 168; not in Atabey and Blackmer.
