This very good condition first edition of Brian Moore's The Great Victorian Collection retains its very 70s dustjacket designed by Janet Halverson and is signed by the author. Moore was a massively influential writer of the 20th century, who emigrated from Belfast to Canada and eventually the United States. Moore was a prolific and influential writer after receiving wide acclaim for his first novel, Judith Hearne, published in 1955. The year it was published, The Great Victorian Collection won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction and Canada's Governor General's Award for English-language fiction.Janet Halverson designed for some of the most important mid-century authors and publishing houses including covers for Tom Wolfe, Mary McCarthy, Maya Angelou, and Joan Didion, and design for Harper's. A retrospective of her design work was exhibited in 2023 and 2024 at Katherine Small Gallery, Massachusetts, and the People's Graphic Design Archive have amassed a digital archive of her book covers.
First edition, signed by the author on front free endpaper; very light staining to leaves; publisher's black cloth backed yellow boards decorated with blind roll on upper cover (some brown stains), spine lettered in silver, uncut pictorial dustjacket lettered in black and red with plastic cover; [viii], 213, [iii]pp.
