Japanese photographer Ishikawa Bunyo was stationed in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City between 1965 and 1968, covering the conflict and later returning to document its aftermath. He was outspoken in his attitude towards America regarding Vietnam, feeling, like many Japanese, that their own country was under 'occupation' by the United States with military bases in Okinawa and elsewhere, as well as culturally by American businesses.

Japanese photographers' contribution to the Vietnam War documentation has historically been under-appreciated in Europe and the United States.

In 1980, a second edition of this book was published in Hanoi, described by Ishikawa as 'a gift to the Vietnamese people.'
