Charming commemorative photograph album of Lord Chelmsford's visit to Kashmir and Jammu in his capacity as Viceroy and Governor-General of India in 1918. Frederic John Napier Thesiger, 1st Viscount Chelmsford (1868-1933) was Viceroy of India from 1916 to 1921 and was responsible for the Montagu–Chelmsford Reforms which introduced the first self-governing institutions of India, namely the the Central Legislative Assembly and the Council of State.

Lord Chelmsford also visited the Punjab and met Maharajah Jagatjit Singh Sahib Bahadur (1872-1949), the last ruling Maharaja of Kapurthala, and the photgrphas show the two at various state functions. The photographs also provide a mixture of military shows and landscape of Kashmir, with the three large folding panoramas particularly pleasing.

Landscape folio (31.5 x 42 cm); 126 numbered and mounted photographs, with one additional loose photograph, inscribed by Captain Denny to front blank, discreet Bombay bookbinders ticket to pastedown, photographs a little age faded as expected, some slight spotting to card margins only; original half red morocco, red buckram boards, gilt lettering to upper board, flat gilt spine, a little worn, in very good condition.
