the sale that never happened
The scarce auction catalogue for the Christie's sale that never happened. Dumfries House in Scotland was due to be sold and its contents auctioned on the 12th and 13th July 2007. The furniture was in the van on the way to Christie's when the whole was 'Saved for the Nation' after the intervention of the Prince of Wales who insisted it be reinstated in the house. Much of the furniture was specially commissioned for the home and made by the famous woodworker Thomas Chippendale and as a result preservationists deemed it important to keep the collection together.2 vols, 4to (30 x 23 cm); illustrated in colour throughout with 634 lots of furniture across two volumes, unmarked internally; original soft covers, gilt lettering to both upper covers and spines, some light yellow marks to both spines (perhaps paint) and three vertical abrasions to rear of Volume I, else very good plus; 367pp, 346pp.
