The scarce first edition of Lodge's second work of fiction and one of his more popular novels, based off his experience in the National Service. This copy was part of author Julian Barnes' library, as stated by the bookplate.Lodge was an English academic and novelist becoming a literature professor at the University of Birmingham as well as teaching at other universities across the world. He retired in 1987 to focus on writing full-time, where he penned almost twenty novels and many works of criticism, including The Art of Fiction.
First edition; 8vo (20.5 x 14 cm); a little age-toned (as usual), else only the occasional minor spot or mark; publisher's red boards with black lettering to spine, original unclipped illustrated dust-jacket in orange white and black, bookplate to front pastedown of Julian Barnes, a little toned to top edge and rear, faint liquid stain to lower edge of front panel, some slight wear to extremities, a few small nicks to upper spine, very good; 224pp
