Lodge was an English academic and novelist becoming a literature professor at the University of Birmingham as well as teaching at other universities across the world. He retired in 1987 to focus on writing full-time, where he penned almost twenty novels and many works of criticism, including The Art of Fiction.

First edition; 8vo (22 x 15 cm); a little age-toned, neat pen ownership signature to prelim, else internally clean; publisher's navy boards with gilt lettering to spine, illustrated green dust-jacket with white and pink decoration, slight signs of wear to extremities, a very bright, near-fine copy; 284pp.
