This 'Victory Edition' was published the year Dennis Brutus was granted asylum in the United States. In the 1960s, because of his activism against South African apartheid, Brutus was imprisoned by the South African government in the cell next to Nelson Mandela and banned from teaching, public speaking, and publishing in the country. After 1966, he lived in exile first in the UK and then in the United States. At the time this collection was published, Brutus was a professor at Northwestern University in Illinois and this edition was his first major collection of poems since 1972. Mostly published in paperback, this hardback edition is very rare.Signed by the author with a dedication to John La Rose (1927-2006), dated November 28th, 1987, 'In friendship for many years in the Struggle.' La Rose was a fellow activist and poet who founded the first specialist Caribbean publishing company in Britain, and subsequently was Chairman of the George Padmore Institute.
Signed by the author; 8vo (22 x 14 cm); portrait frontispiece, very light offsetting on endpapers; case bound publisher's pale green cloth, very good; [xiii], 98pp.
