One of the first attempts to record the graves and gravestone inscriptions of burials around the area of Calcutta. Notable not just as an early Calcutta printing but also for its inclusion of Urdu script. There are a number of Derozarios, or D'Rozarios living in Calcutta in the early nineteenth century, suggesting that the author's interest was as a local and intimate, rather than taking information from second hand sources.

The desire to preserve memorials in South Asia would eventually manifest itself in the form of the British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia which would go on to continue the preservation of memorial inscriptions started by this work.

Scarce, with none at auction in the last 100 years.

First edition; 8vo (21 x 13.5 cm); contemporary half calf, cloth boards, spine in six compartments with gilt black morocco lettering piece, spine chipped, upper joint repaired, title a little creased, bookplate to pastedown, ownership inscription to last leaf rubbed, internally very good; [xii], 230 pp.
