H.R.H. Edward, Prince of Wales succeeded to the British throne on the death of his Father, King George V in January 1936. However, due to the British Government and the Church of England's refusal to allow him to marry the twice divorced American, Wallis Simpson, the King abdicated on 11 December 1936 in favour of his younger brother, George VI, who would lead the country through WWII. At this juncture he assumed the title of His Royal Highness the Duke of Windsor. On his marriage to Mrs. Simpson she became the Duchess of Windsor although she was never granted the title of H.R.H. This limited edition book follows his own journey to becoming King, and henceforth his time after, up to 1951 twenty-one years before his death.Limited edition, number 33 of 270, signed to frontispiece; 8vo (24 x 16 cm); frontispiece and 22 collotype photographic plates, offsetting from turn-ins on free endpapers and next leaf edges, otherwise near-fine; original publisher's rust morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, gilt Royal Coat of Arms to front, top edge gilt others untrimmed, matching marbled slip-case, a little rubbed, small mark to upper board, otherwise fine; xvi, 440pp. (incl. half title and limitation leaf).
