The Ethics of Aristotle

The fourth edition, revised of Sir Alexander Grant's (1826-1884) English-language translation of Aristotle's (384-322 BC)writings on Ethics, with his notes and critical essays.

The translation was first published in 1857 whilst Grant was working as a private tutor in Oxford, following his election to the fellowship of Oriel College in 1849. He later served in a number of teaching and administrative posts at Elphinstone College and Bombay University in India, before returning to Britain to take up the position of Principal of the University of Edinburgh, which he held from 1868 until his death in 1884.

'Grant was the first British scholar to interpret Aristotle in primarily historical terms. Jowett's influence had led him to the study of German scholarship, and he followed Hegel in adopting an evolutionary picture of the history of Greek philosophy. Grant's edition was republished several times, but his adoption of an administrative career prevented him making further original contributions to classical studies' (ODNB).
