An attractive signed first edition of the first novel by Evan S. Connell, set in Kansas City during the inter-war years, serving as a mirror to the social changes taking place in America at that time. A sequel, Mr. Bridge was published ten years later, and the two were combined for a Merchant Ivory adaptation in 1990, starring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.

Connell was nominated for a Man Booker International Lifetime Achievement Prize in 2009.

First edition, first printing, signed by the author; 8vo; publisher's two-tone cloth, slight rolling to spine, dust-jacket by Susanna Suba, worn at corners and head of spine, slight edge wear, pink to spine slightly faded.
