London, H.K. Lewis, 1871

A handsome medical set. A handsomely bound prize copy of this widely read medical guide, originally published in Germany in 1863 as Lehrbuch der speziellen Pathologie und Therapie Physiologie und pathologische Anatomie. The author, Dr. Felix Niemeyer (1820-1871), was a professor in the new field of internal medicine at the universities of Greifswald and Tübingen, and served as consulting physician to King Charles I of Württemberg. He is best remembered for promoting a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet.

This set was awarded to Ernest Alfred Elkington as a senior prize in internal medicine at the Birmingham General Hospital for the 1870-71 school year. Elkington was the son and grandson of physicians, and after finishing his undergraduate medical education at Birmingham he studied in London and then Edinburgh under Joseph Lister, with whom he became close. He went on to have a distinguished medical and philanthropic career in Newport, Shropshire, advocating for reform of the water and sewage system and serving as a government and Red Cross medical officer (obituary, The British Medical Journal, December 5, 1936).

Second English language edition, translated from the eighth German edition; 2 vols., 8vo, (21.5 x 13.5 cm); contemporary pencilled underlining and short notes in the margins, some faint toning and occasional light spotting, especially to the early and late leaves; contemporary prize binding of tan calf, spines elaborately gilt in compartments, gilt titles and floral roll to boards, edges and turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers; Cornish Brothers Booksellers of Birmingham tickets to front pastedowns, some light rubbing and a few small scuffs to the calf, partial fading of the boards; an excellent set; 733 and 795pp.
