A scarce work describing the political and military operations of the East India Company in India, and the author's detour to Egypt. Lacking the folding map of India. The seven plates on India are a mixture of scenes and costumes, while the five on Egypt focus on pyramids and their inner chambers. Abbey attributes the scarcity of this work to the author buying up the work on publication.

George Augustus Frederick FitzClarence, 1st Earl of Munster (1794-1842) was the eldest son of William IV by Mrs. Jordan. In addition to an account of his journey from India to England in 1817-18 while carrying despatches, Fitzclarence discusses his encounters with the East India Company. In the long section on Egypt he describes at length his contacts with Salt and Belzoni and gives an interesting account of his visits to the Pyramids.

First edition; 4to (28 x 22.5 cm); 12 plates by R. Havell after the author, of which 11 aquatints, of which 9 hand-coloured, and 1 line engraving, with 6 (of 7) engraved maps and plans, small damp staining to lower corner of text block affecting margins only, slight offsetting from plates; contemporary boards rebacked in later calf, boards ruled in gilt, contrasting gilt lettering piece to spine, all edges red, later marbled end-papers with reinforced hinges, slightly scuffed and bumped, spine slightly rubbed. [4], xxiv, 502 (including 167* and 168*), [2] pp.

Abbey (Travel), 519; Blackmer 597.
