Fortune's travels between 1843 and 1845 in Kuangtung, Fukien, the Chekiang coast, and Shanghai. Fortune (1812-1880) was a Scottish botanist, plant hunter and traveller, known for introducing around 250 new ornamental plants, mainly from China, but also Japan, into the gardens of Britain, Australia and the USA. He also played a role in development of the tea industry in India in the 19th century.

First edition; 8vo (23 x 15 cm); pictorial half- title, engraved map, 3 tinted lithographed plates slightly foxed, 12 other illustrations; publisher's original reddish brown cloth, pictorial gilt vignette to upper cover, spine lettered in gilt, spine professionally restored and a little sunned; xiv, [ii], 407, [i] pp., 16 pages ads dated January 1847 at end.
