Frankland, descended from two famous naval families, and himself later an admiral, arrived in Istanbul in 1827. An energetic sightseer, his 'descriptions are lively and detailed' (Koç). The plates include costumes and views of Constantinople, Smyrna, Damascus, Beirut, etc.
