The first English language edition, preceded by a translation in Swedish published by P.A. Norstedt & Soners in the previous year.Inscribed by the author in the year of publication to the front free endpaper: 'For Harriet with many / happy returns for a 1961 birthday - / + love from graham. / Please keep hidden till Jan. 16.' The recipient was Harriet Stonor, the youngest daughter of Greene's long-standing friends Sherman Stonor, 6th Baron Camoys and Jeanne Stonor, Lady Camoys.
First UK edition, first impression, inscribed by the author; 8vo; unmarked internally except by the author; publisher's black cloth, silver lettering to spine, with the unclipped dust-jacket, without the usual tanning to spine, very minor edge-wear; a near-fine example.
