A very good copy of Harry Mathews' second novel, portions of which were first published in The Paris Review, Mother, and Art & Literature. Mathews was an American expat from New York who lived and wrote in Paris as well as the first American member of the French literary society, Oulipo.

Tlooth was the first book published by 'Paris Review Editions,' a joint venture of the New York publisher, Doubleday & Company, and the literary quarterly, The Paris Review. At the time, Mathews was in a relationship with an editor at the Review, Maxine Groffsky. This edition was published seven years before their headquarters were moved from Paris to New York City.

First edition; 8vo (21.5 x 14.5 cm); contemporary insert 'with the compliments of the author,' sparse in-text illustrations, very minor spotting to half-title and final page, else unmarked internally; publisher's beige and black boards, device to upper cover, spine lettered in gilt, brown endpapers with publisher's device, untrimmed page edges, some minor marks to top edge; uncut pictorial dust-jacket, faded spine, a little soiled, primarily to rear panel, slightly rubbed at extremities, most notably the upper joint, small tear to lower joint (approx. 2cm), though all fairly minor and not affecting text or image; 191, [1]p.
