London, Jonathan Cape, 1958
Dr. No was begun as a screenplay for a proposed television show, Commander Jamaica, and was written at Fleming's Goldeneye Estate on the island. When the television project failed to materialise he repurposed the plot as the next novel in the James Bond series, following From Russia, with Love, then in the editing stage. As he had done for the previous Bond novels, Fleming also created the concept for the dust jacket art. He envisioned the female lead, Honeychile Rider, appearing Venus-like at her introduction, and Ursula Andress's portrayal of her in this scene became one of the most famous in movie history.
First edition, first impression; 8vo; only very faint spots to the edges of the text block; original black boards, titles to spine in silver; spine rolled; in the price-clipped jacket with minimal rubbing at the extremities, very good condition, housed in a custom black cloth solander case with red velvet interior; 256pp.
