history of the British navy from the time of the Romans to George I

An excellent first edition set of this early naval history of Britain from the time of the Roman Conquest to the reign of King George I (1660-1727).

The text includes detailed biographies of principal commanders, including Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir John Lawson, Vice-Admiral 'Brave' Benbow, Sir George Rooke during the formative years of the British navy, as well as more a general history of the navy's development.

Lives of the Admirals was among the author John Campbell's (1708-1775) most popular works, running to three editions within his lifetime and several expanded editions following his death.

With excellent provenance, firstly for Clan Menzies of Perthshire, and secondly for Captain D.M. Fyffe of Trinity House.

First edition; 4 vols; 8vo (20 x 13 cm); vols 1 & 2 dated 1742, 3 & 4 dated 1744, woodcut initials and headpieces, qds present to rear of vols 3 & 4 as called for by ESTC, bookplates to front pastedown and free endpaper recto of each vol., a little toned; contemporary sprinkled calf, spines tooled in gilt, contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces, sprinkled edges, a little rubbed with minor loss to spine ends, very good.
