Surrey. A truly beautiful map of Surrey, first produced by the famous English cartographer John Speed (1542-1629) in 1610-11 in his atlas "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain". The upper left inset depicts Richmond Palace, a royal residence built by Henry VII, which now remains only in ruins, having been demolished by the Commonwealth in 1649 for its raw building materials. The upper right inset depicts a second Tudor royal palace, Nonsuch Palace, built by Henry VIII. It too was eventually pulled down for the value of its materials, this time by Charles II' mistress in order to pay off gambling debts.
