Travels in Africa [Third expedition].
1882-1886.
London, Chapman and Hall, 1892
The third of Junker's expeditions. Junker charted the course of the Congo and its tributaries during his decade in Central Africa. Born of German parents in Moscow, he was influenced in his desire to explore Africa by Schweinfurth who drew his attention to the lands south of the Libyan desert, 'a region at that time ... still shrouded in the veil of an awe-inspiring mystery'. His fascination with the region led him to make three expeditions over a period of eleven years and he is recognised as one of the great African explorers.
First English edition, 8vo, vii, 586 pp., unopened, frontispiece, title-page vignette, numerous illustrations throughout, many full-page, large folding colour map, original green cloth gilt, pictorial vignettes to upper covers, original orange pictorial dust-wrapper, slight chips at edges, a fine example.
