The plate was used as an illustration in the Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie by Théodore de Pauly (p.152).
The Talmudists (or the Rabanites) were the majority of the Jewish population of Russia at the time of publication. The Talmudists gained their name due to their devotion to the studies of the Talmud and the Kabbalah.
