The author's copy, with his bookplate, of this important voyage to Borneo and the Philippines.Keppel, a British naval officer who had served in the Opium War against the Borneo pirates in 1843-44, returned to the China station in 1847 and was appointed to convey Sir James Brooke to Labuan, an island off the Borneo coast. Keppel's book treats of the voyage to Labuan, incidents there, piracy in the South China Sea, and gives a description of Manila.
First edition; 2 vols, 8vo (25 x 16.5 cm); the author's bookplate to pastedowns, large folding map, 8 lithograph plates; contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spine in six gilt compartments with contrasting gilt red and green morocco lettering pieces, all edges and endpapers marbled, a very good copy; xiv, [2], 301, [1]; vii, [1], 286 pp.
