First and only edition of this rare and beautifully illustrated work of microscopy comprising eighteen separate fascicles published between 1769 and 1778. Each contains a detailed, hand-coloured plate depicting primarily marine invertebrates, including copepods, nudibranchs, shrimp, worms, and jellyfish, as well as spiders, midges, mites, and a mosquito larva.Author Martinus Slabber (1740-1835) was a Dutch public official and naturalist who was the first to describe a number of oceanic species, including phylum of predatory marine worms, the chaetognaths. Slabber was a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and sold his collection of bird specimens to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden.
First edition; tall 4to (26 x 20 cm); 18 hand-coloured engraved plates of which 6 are folding, the occasional light spot to contents but overall clean; late-20th century calf, black morocco label to spine, new endpapers and blanks, spine and edges of boards faded, lightly rubbed, very good condition; 165 pp.
