Hand-coloured illustrations of carnival scenes, the second volume also contains a facsimile of a poem by Luther. The Nuremberg Shrovetide Carnival or Schembartlauf was popular in the 15th century and many manuscripts (Schembartbuch) depicted the costumed men, this is a 19th century facsimile of such a book.
4to (21 x 17 cm) 2 vols in 1; 26 plates (24 of which are hand-coloured) in vol.1 and two plates and a lithograph in the vol. 2; later brown morocco with gilt title to spine; some foxing and tape repairs.
