contemporary blind-ruled calf
The collected works of the Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527) in English, following the translation of the republican politician Henry Neville (1620-1694). A handsome example in contemporary blind-ruled calf.Including his major titles The Prince, History of Florence, Discourses on Livy, and The Art of War, together with his lesser known Life of Castruccio Castricani of Lucca, novella Marriage of Belphegor, and the spurious letter to Zenobius Buondelmontius dated a decade after Machiavelli's death in which he defends himself from the worst imputations against him. From 'an early date Neville was thought to be the author of this letter, although it may have been an earlier forgery brought back, as the preface claims, from his visit to Italy in the 1640s' (ODNB).
With provenance firstly for the English politician Francis Fulford (1666-1700), Member of Parliament for Callington in Cornwall, bearing his bookplate to the front pastedown, and secondly for the physicist Edward Neville da Costa Andrade (1887-1971).
Second edition; folio (32.5 x 21.5 cm); divisional titles, the preface and Letter to Zanobius bound at rear, armorial bookplate to front pastedown, bookplate to front free endpaper recto, old library annotations in pen to front free endpaper, minor dampstaining to gutter margin of title and prelims, small tear with slight loss to margin not affecting text of 3P4, closed tear to margin of 3S1 repaired with archival tape, occasional light toning; contemporary blind-ruled calf, re-backed preserving original gilt spine in 6 compartments, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece to second compartment, sprinkled edges, a little abraded, very good; [24], 177, 188-189, [5], 199-'256' [i.e. 263], 266-267, [5], 267-314, 317-431, [5], 433-528, [16]pp.
