The first edition of Edward Phillips Oppenheim's (1866-1946) The Battle of Basinghall Street. A prolific novelist, Oppenheim enjoyed considerable popularity as a writer of genre fiction at the turn of the twentieth century. Unpretentious, Oppenheim freely admitted that his light-hearted prose was easy to write, but as the New York Times observed in its obituary for the author his books 'were equally easy to read, especially on a summer vacation, when escapist literature is most welcome'.

This copy in its original pictorial dust-jacket with design by the Art Deco illustrator Ethel 'Bip' Pares (1904-1977).

First edition; 8vo (19.5 x 13.5 cm); 6pp. ads. to rear; publisher's blue cloth, original pictorial dust-jacket with design by Bip Pares, unclipped, a few minor closed tears to upper and lower edges, minor soiling to front and rear pastedowns.
