codifying quantum mechanics
First edition, first impression and a lovely copy of this landmark textbook on the principles of quantum mechanics which 'deeply influenced a generation of physicists' (ODNB).Paul Dirac (1902-1984) was awarded the Noble Prize in Physics in 1932 for his relativistic wave equation, which correctly described the spin of electrons and was the first theory to fully account for special relativity in the context of quantum mechanics. The equation implied the existence of antimatter, predicting electrons with a positive charge, a daring speculation that was unexpectedly confirmed in 1932 when positrons were discovered in cosmic radiation.
First edition, first impression; 8vo; a little spotting to title, half title, and endpapers, contents very faintly toned; original dark green cloth, titles to spine gilt, spine tanned, cloth a little rubbed, an excellent copy; 257pp.
