One of Larkin's defining collections, inscribed by the author in black ink on the front free endpaper, 'For Brian, / my favourite editor, / affectionately / from / Philip'.The recipient was Brian Cox, co-founder and editor of the Critical Quarterly, who published Larkin's poetry alongside that of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes. The journal was initially based at the University of Hull, where Cox was a lecturer and where Larkin famously spent three decades working as the university's head librarian.
First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author; 8vo; publisher's grey cloth, titles to spine gilt, with the unclipped dustjacket, slightly toned, minor creasing to extremities; an excellent copy.
