The first volume contains a description of Egypt, with volume two describing Palestine, Syria, Mesopotamia, Cyprus, Crete, the Greek islands, Asia Minor, Thrace, Greece and other parts of Europe. 'Pococke travelled extensively in Europe from 1833-6 and continued on to the Levant, reaching Alexandria in September 1737. He remained three years in the Eastern Mediterranean visiting Egypt, Palestine, Asia Minor and Greece... Pococke achieved a great reputation with this publication... and was prasied by Gibbon. Pococke also published a catalogue of his numismatic finds in Egypt'.
