London, Printed for Nath. Crouch, 1684

Early illustrated history and survey of London. A sweet, early history and survey of London by the bookseller and writer Nathaniel Crouch (fl.1700), one of the first in the genre of illustrated tourist books which were later popularised in Victorian England by the likes of Pennant's London and Shepherd's Metropolitan Improvements. The work was published under the pseudonym Richard Burton, which Crouch 'used in full, or in its abbreviated form 'R.B', on the many publications, mainly on historical subjects, he put out between 1678 and 1712' (Adams).

Illustrated with 6 engraved plates of key events in the city's history, from the Peasant's Revolt to the Great Fire of London, and 66 heraldic woodcuts, which closely follow those in Delaune's Present State of London published in 1681, showing the arms of the City, Merchant, and Livery Companies.

With provenance for the MP and railway entrepreneur Sir Edward Watkin (1819-1901), who attempted to build the first channel tunnel, and the literary collector Alexander Gardyne (d.1885).

Third edition, enlarged; 12mo (15 x 9 cm); armorial bookplate to front pastedown, ownership stamp to title blank verso, 6 engraved plates including frontis, 66 woodcut illustrations, printer's device to title, final 3pp. of ads.; 19th century calf, ruled in gilt, gilt spine, edges tinted yellow, front joint cracked but holding, slight loss of gilding to spine, extremities a little rubbed, some internal toning, otherwise a handsome copy; [4], 233, [3]pp.
