London, Bentley, 1840
The author was a surgeon in the East India Medical Service which he entered in 1810. The work is based on letters home to relatives. The book does not pretend to be an authoritative account of British policy in that part of the world and official attitudes towards Dost Mohomed and Runjet Sing, but is rather a careful first-hand record of the journey, supplemented by gossip from the Staff mess-parties (from the preface).
First edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., x, 291; vii, [iii], 307 pp., 6 lithograph plates (light spotting), 2 illustrations in the text, original mauve blindstamped cloth gilt, light wear, a very good example.
