The first edition in English of the Baron de Sainte-Croix's history of Alexander the Great (356-323 BC), translated from the original French by Sir Richard Clayton (1744-1828).

The text is illustrated with d'Anville's engraved folding-map of 'The Marches of Alexander the Great', originally published in Rollin's Histoire de l'Ancienne, showing the route of Alexander's expedition from the Hellespont through the Dardanelles and present-day Turkey, thence the Levant, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, and into Afghanistan. Alexander reached as far as the banks of the Hyphasis River (now known as the Beas River) in northern India, where the conqueror's exhausted armies finally mutinied.

First edition in English; 4to (28.5 x 22.5 cm); folding engraved map by d'Anville, errata f. bound at rear, MS notes in pen to front free endpaper recto, occasional pencial annotations and pen corrections to text, hinges reinforced at endpapers, dampstaining to title and preliminary ff otherwise internally clean; contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece to 2nd spine compartment, corners rubbed with slight loss, very good; [8], 423, [3]pp.
