Early photography. An attractive description of the excavations of the long neglected site at Cyrene in Libya between Tripoli and Benghazi, with albumen photographs of some of the Greek statuary, and lithographed plates showing the site and surrounding landscape. C. T. Newton, who was the Director of the excavations at Halicarnassus and Keeper of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the British Museum, was involved in this excavation. The Greeks colonised Cyrenaica in the 7th century BC. Tripoli, the capital of the province, is one of the oldest places in the world and is at the northern terminus of the three great historic caravan routes. Benghazi was the ancient Berenice.
