Engraved score . John Gay's (1685-1732) musical play The Beggars Opera opened at Lincoln's Inn Fields on 29th January 1728 to critical and commercial success, enjoying a run of 62 nights in its opening season. A form of English ballad opera, it satirised the Italian genre which hitherto been popular in England.

This edition includes a list of the Dramatis Personae for the opera's performance at the Drury Lane and Covent Garden theatres in 1777, naming the notable Georgian actors Ralph Wewitzer, Mary Bradshaw, and George Mattlocks amongst others.


4to (28.5 x 23 cm); title with engraved vignette portrait of John Gay, Table of the Songs, Dramatis Personne 1777, Introduction, the playscript, and music score with libretto on 46 engraved plates; toned, a few random spots or marks, otherwise very good; later full polished calf, contrasting green morocco lettering-piece, scuffed with minor wear to extremities but very sound; viii, 48pp. 46 plates.
