The complete six-volume set of George Walter Thornbury's (1828-1876) narrative history of London, nicely illustrated and full of insightful reflections on a city which had changed much during Thornbury's life. He was a prolific author who also wrote the first biography of J. M. W. Turner.
The final four volumes were completed by Edward Walford (1823-1897) following Thornbury's tragic death owing to 'exhaustion from acute mania' at the Camberwell House Lunatic Asylum in June 1876 (ODNB).
